I know, it’s the coldest weeks of winter here in the UK, but I just had an air conditioning unit installed in my bedroom in London because after suffering through three heat waves in three consecutive summers, my wife and I just couldn’t bear it anymore.
"I have no clue why mathematicians, biologists, and physicists are so likely to take sick leave in a heat wave", -- heaven's forbid the idea that even mathematicians might take a mental health day off, when it's nice and sunny outside...
'However, I have no clue why mathematicians, biologists, and physicists are so likely to take sick leave in a heat wave.'
Because they can.
The study, p13 ‘The number of sick leave cases per 1,000 workers is highest in the northwestern part of Germany and lowest in the southeastern region of Bavaria.’
The southeastern region of Bavaria's economy is dominated by Industrial, physical work. The northwestern part of Germany delivers the greatest share of GDP, is also industrial and is the most populous.
So a region dominated by Catholics calls in sick less often than the region with a substantial number of Protestants. Who would have thought…What would Weber have thought of this?
‘About 30% of all cases last only one to three days'.
Because after 3 days a more stringent control system kicks in.
‘About 36% of all cases are linked to respiratory diseases, followed by 28% linked to problems of the musculoskeletal system and the connective tissues, and 14% linked to issues of the digestive system. Across all age groups, women call in sick more often than men (Panel f). While the duration of sick leave increases with age for both sexes, men are on sick leave slightly longer than women, on average.’
Respiratory diseases triggered by heatwaves are mostly dangerous to children and the elderly and both groups are excluded from the data. So what is going on here?
Sick leave registering on Fridays is remarkably low.
Mental and behavioral disorders increase 6.7% on a 30C day. That would be the mathematicians i guess…
20 to 34 yos are more often sick than the older cohorts with women high performers @ being sick in all cohorts.
The parks of- and surrounding lakes near Amsterdam are typically quite full DURING working hours on a nice 30C day. And yes, women in their 20s and 30s are more prevalent. Although they also work pt much more than men.
p16 North western Germany calls in sick the most but is not the hottest area. Are Protestants more feeble?
p19 'However, it is not even clear to what extent exposure at work and at
home drive sick leave.'
?
What is more detrimental to western economies than a few extra warm days (despite the fuss the average citizen still enjoys 30C days) are the armies of unproductive academics who produce these studies.
Next to the armies of pr & communications managers (ministerial departments have thousands of them to better twist reality), lawyers, BA’s & MBA’s (i e. GPM’s = general purpose managers), media 'scientists’, marketing-media managers, media managers, marketing managers, digital marketing managers, AI-driven media marketing managers, psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists, economists (sorry), coaches (as western society feminizes the number of coaches grows with it - yesterday i saw my first Youtube ad by a coach (obviously a lady) offering coaching to wannabee coaches) and, of course, the ever growing (apart from the US under Trump), army groups of civil service workers (while their interpretation of ‘service’ may differ).
German obesity: Overweight and obesity account for roughly 10.7% of total health expenditure in Germany, reducing GDP by 3.0%.
So reduce obesity to decrease healthcare costs and to increase confidence when darting around halfnaked on a nice warm 30C day.
To round off; while the study found that young women call in sick the most, for 3 days or less, the UKs Labour party is just as obsessed with productivity as the average Dutch female pt employee (who may be distracted from reaching full productivity though by the constant lurking risk posed by the patriarchy, female internalized misogyny (that would be conservative women disagreeing with progressive women, which is an absolutely disgusting treason by the former) and white supremacy (being white is the only thing NOT on a spectrum).
Labour, a collective of rather weird personalities, is trying to push through a labor law making employers responsible for the possibly unsafe, harmful or in any other way hurting experiences their employees may have. Employers literally have to safeguard their waiters and waitresses for instance against overhearing customers conversations which may upset them. (Of course, the law will solely result in more jobs for Labour voting civil workers registering the complaints).

I probably know more mathematicians than most people, and trust me, a day off won’t improve their mental health 🤣

While when you look at digestive system and heatwaves it gets really hard to take complaints here serious. https://www.google.com/search?q=digestive+system+and+heatwaves&rlz=1C1UEAD_nlNL995NL995&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
And when looking at the musculoskeletal system and heatwaves it becomes silly. I’d say only increased risk of injury can be taken serious as a complaint to not work. https://www.google.com/search?q=musculoskeletal+system+and+heatwaves&rlz=1C1UEAD_nlNL995NL995&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
