#1 Reason they would never (be allowed to) join is that Turkey has more people than France and will likely overtake Germany. In the EU Parlement, that would mean would become a top player and neither France nor Germany would give up the power they have in the union.
I understand politicians like to frame it in terms of "cultural differences" but it's really about power.

Agree. I have never been in favor of Turkey joining the EU for that matter. Cultural discrepancies are just too big.
